Some whisky releases are built around flavour. Others are built around story. For Deanston Distillery, The Chronicles has always been about both.
Created as a series that captures Deanston’s independent spirit and unconventional approach to whisky making, The Chronicles releases have explored bold maturation, rare casks and the moments that shaped the distillery over the decades.
Now, as Deanston celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2026, the story comes full circle with The Chronicles: Anniversary Edition - a whisky that doesn’t just celebrate the distillery’s history, but brings it together in one bottle.
A marriage of six distinctive casks from six different decades, united through a rare Porto Lágrima finish, the release captures six chapters of Deanston’s story through flavour, texture and time.
Because Deanston has never been a distillery built to follow convention.
And The Chronicles was never designed to be a conventional whisky series.

THE CHRONICLES SERIES: A DIFFERENT KIND OF WHISKY STORY
From the beginning, The Chronicles has reflected the spirit of experimentation and independent thinking that runs through Deanston Distillery.
Each release in the series has explored different cask types, flavour profiles and maturation styles while remaining unmistakably Deanston at its core - rich, textured and naturally waxy.
The series became a platform for telling Deanston's story through whisky:
- Exploring unusual cask combinations
- Showcasing the versatility of Deanston spirit
- Capturing moments from the distillery’s evolution
- Celebrating the people, places and decisions that shaped Deanston
With each edition, the series pushed further into flavour exploration while remaining grounded in Deanston’s Highland single malt character.

2026: 60 YEARS OF DEANSTON DISTILLERY
2026 marks 60 years since the former Adelphi Cotton Mill was transformed into Deanston Distillery in 1966.
From the outside, Deanston has never looked like a traditional Scotch whisky distillery. Because it wasn’t built as one.
The unusual shape of the converted cotton mill forced generations of distillery workers to think differently - adapting equipment, solving problems creatively and developing an entrepreneurial mindset that still defines the distillery today.
That spirit of independence became part of Deanston’s DNA.
Over six decades, the distillery has:
- Produced whisky for blends before establishing itself as a single malt
- Experimented with peated and unpeated spirit
- Become one of the first Scotch distilleries to release an organic single malt
- Continued pushing cask experimentation through unconventional maturation
The Chronicles: Anniversary Edition was created to honour those decades of evolution. Not through nostalgia. But through flavour.

THE CHRONICLES: ANNIVERSARY EDITION
At the heart of the release is a marriage of six casks, each drawn from a different decade of Deanston’s history.
Each cask was selected not only for the character it contributes to the whisky, but for the milestone it represents within the story of the distillery.
Those six casks were then unified through a six-month finish in rare Porto Lágrima casks - bringing together flavours that, on paper, shouldn’t work together, but somehow do.
The result is a whisky that feels layered, unexpected and unmistakably Deanston.
The Casks Behind The Release

1975 OLOROSO FINISH - THE RIVER TEITH
In the 1960s and early 1970s, much of the whisky produced at Deanston was destined for blends under the name “Teith Mill”.
But even as the distillery evolved, one thing remained constant: the River Teith. Its water continues to power production and shape the spirit today.
The 1975 refill matured cask reflects Deanston’s classic waxy character through honeyed malt, orchard fruit and gentle oak.

1980 REFILL MATURED - DEANSTON VILLAGE
Like many distilleries across Scotland, Deanston faced difficult years during the 1980s.
Declining market conditions forced the distillery to close its doors, but while production stopped, the spirit of the community never disappeared.
Deanston Village remained deeply connected to the distillery and ready to welcome its return when production resumed in 1990.
That sense of resilience and continuity is reflected in the 1980 Refill Matured cask. Its honeyed malt, orchard fruit and gentle oak showcase the enduring waxy Highland character that remained at the heart of Deanston through every chapter of its story.

1991 VIRGIN OAK FINISH - THE WASHBACKS
Before the distillery closure, the 1970s and 80s saw experimentation with peated and unpeated styles at Deanston. But when the distillery reopened in 1990, there was renewed clarity around what Deanston whisky should be: a fruity Highland Single Malt shaped by fermentation and texture.
The 1991 Virgin Oak cask adds vanilla sweetness, toasted coconut and spice - flavours that complement the fruity spirit character developed during fermentation in our washbacks.

2006 ARMAGNAC FINISH - THE MASH TUN
At Deanston, some of the most important flavour decisions happen long before spirit reaches a cask.
Our open top mash tun has played a central role in shaping the distillery’s character for decades, helping create the rich, textured and waxy spirit style Deanston is known for today.
In the early 2000s, that spirit of craftsmanship and experimentation led Deanston to become one of the first distilleries in Scotland to release an organic single malt - a bold move that reflected the distillery’s entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to do things differently.
The 2006 Armagnac cask contributes deeper fruit richness, stewed berries and layered sweetness.

2013 CADILLAC WINE FINISH - THE VISITOR CENTRE
In 2012, Deanston officially opened its visitor centre, welcoming whisky drinkers from all over the world into the distillery for the first time.
As more people discovered Deanston, the distillery’s reputation for flavour exploration continues to grow to this day.
The 2013 Cadillac Wine cask brings floral citrus and dark berry notes that lift the whisky with vibrancy and elegance.

2020 FIRST FILL BURGUNDY WINE MATURED - THE STILLHOUSE
In 2025, Deanston replaced its stills for the first time in decades.
But importantly, their shape remained exactly the same - because the original stills had been specifically designed to fit within the converted cotton mill itself.
It’s a perfect example of how Deanston’s unconventional beginnings continue shaping the distillery today.
The youthful Burgundy cask adds fresh red fruit brightness and energy to the final whisky.

UNIFIED THROUGH PORTO LAGRIMA - THE PORTEUS MILL
At the heart of Deanston Distillery sits the Porteus Mill - installed in 1966 and just as old as the distillery itself. Every bottle of Deanston single malt begins its journey here.
For six decades, the mill has quietly shaped the spirit character that defines Deanston today, grinding the malt that becomes the foundation of every release.
In many ways, it represents the thread that connects every era of the distillery together. Which makes it the perfect symbol for The Chronicles: Anniversary Edition.
Just as the mill brings together the raw materials that form Deanston spirit, the rare Porto Lágrima finish helps unify six decades of cask influence into one harmonious whisky.
The result is layered, elegant and unmistakably Deanston - bringing together flavours that shouldn’t work together on paper, yet somehow do.
A Release That Could Only Be Deanston
At 53.6% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural colour, The Chronicles: Anniversary Edition captures everything that defines Deanston today:
- Independent thinking
- Experimental maturation
- Traditional production methods
- Waxy Highland spirit character
- A refusal to follow convention blindly
It’s a whisky shaped as much by people and place as by casks themselves.
Six decades of Deanston distilled into one release. Proudly cut from a different tartan.
